oh man sudden flood of memories of when I wanted to be a singer when I grew up and I always sang along with Whitney and Mariah because they were the only ones on the radio who could really sing. And that dream was killed dead by watching The Jacksons: An American Dream and being all traumatized and going “holy shit I never want to be famous O_O”, plus also my great-aunt told me I “don’t have a singing voice”, fucking jerk

ETA: oh also I was ashamed to like both Whitney and MJ because of my mom hating them but I’m pretty sure it was because she was racist at the time :( (she’d changed by the time you met her, Val, but when I was a kid, oh man) I remember once I asked my mom if she liked Whitney Houston and she said she couldn’t stand her because she sang “too fancy” or something. She did not use the phrase “uppity Negro” but that was probably the gist of it. My mom had real insecurity around POC who she perceived as better looking/more talented than her/otherwise a threat. I remember her complaining about Maria on Sesame Street having such white teeth or something :/
